About Greentown, Ohio
Greentown is a community of 3,382 people in northern Stark County, part of the Canton and Massillon metropolitan area. It takes its name from Green Township, where the community once lay. Henry Wise and Peter Dickerhoof, who owned the land, platted the village in February 1816 and split its 64 lots evenly between their two properties.
Wise held the northern half of the new village and Dickerhoof the southern half. Both men spent the years that followed helping it grow. Ephraim Ball and Cornelius Aultman later made their first plows here.
- Alleys on the diagonalThe 1881 county history called the village plan unusual. Two alleys ran corner to corner across every square, and four small open parks filled the corners of the central square.
- Where Ball and Aultman beganEphraim Ball started a small plant in Greentown, where he and Cornelius Aultman built plows and a few other farm machines. The village had no railroad and little hope of getting one. Once the line to Canton, eight miles south, was assured, the two came home and talked it over with Lewis and Jacob Miller and George Cook. All of them agreed to move, and soon afterward they went to Canton and formed Ball, Aultman and Company.
- A village school until 2023Greentown belongs to the North Canton City School District, and its older students attend Hoover High School in North Canton. The district once ran Greentown Intermediate School in the village and sold the building in 2023.
