About Silver Lake, Ohio
Silver Lake is a village in Summit County with two lakes and a history as a recreation destination. Its population was 2,516 at the 2020 census. Once visited for picnicking, swimming, steamers, and an amusement park, the community incorporated as a residential village in 1918.
- Wetmore's PondThe lake was once called Wetmore's Pond for Judge William Wetmore, who built a cabin overlooking its spring-fed water in 1808.
- Lake ExcursionsAn 1891 account described steamers, surrounding woods, picnic grounds, and a railroad station serving visitors.
- Amusement Park EraBeginning in 1874, the recreation grounds expanded to include animal exhibits, a roller coaster, sports facilities, a dance hall, and a hotel.
- Village FormationResidential subdivision followed the property's 1917 sale, and Silver Lake incorporated as a village in 1918.
- Two LakesThe village contains Silver Lake and Crystal Lake, with water covering 0.18 of its 1.60 square miles.
