About Albion, California
A sawmill went up at Albion in 1852 and 1853, and it kept sawing until 1928. By 1939 the abandoned mill was decaying among half-ruined company shacks by the river mouth. The villagers then lived mostly by fishing and berry picking.
Captain William Richardson hired Mr. Scharf to build a water-powered sawmill at Albion. It was built during the winter of 1852 and 1853. It was only the second mill in all of Mendocino County.
- Where the name came fromAlbion got its name in 1844. It recalls Sir Francis Drake, who came ashore on this northern stretch of the California coast and named the land New Albion. Albion was an old name for Britain, from the Latin word for white, after the White Cliffs of Dover.
