About Comptche, California

Comptche is a community of 167 people in Mendocino County, 17 miles southeast of Fort Bragg. The Albion River runs along its southern edge and flows west to the Pacific at Albion. The town's name is tied to the Pomo word Compatche, which means "In the valley among the hills" in that language.

The first settlers reached the valley by walking or riding about 32 miles west from Ukiah on a path the Pomo people had long used. Some carried their own goods, and others paid Pomo workers to haul their supplies over the hills.

“When Chief Compatche finally passed away, after moving through the Comptche area with his tribe many times, he was buried on a knoll just west of the Ottoson property.”
Chuck Bush, Mendocino Beacon, 2003
  • A sea captain turned loggerA man named Hoak came west from Maine after years of commanding ships. He switched to the lumber trade, became the first person to cut timber in Comptche, and later rose to superintendent of the Albion Logging Company.
  • A Pomo village nearbyNo one knows for certain where the town's name came from. A Pomo village called Komacho stood close by, and the valley sat on the Pomo route that later brought settlers in from Ukiah.
  • A post office twiceComptche's first post office opened in 1877, but it shut down before that year was over. It opened again in 1879.
