About Anson, Maine

Anson's first settlers came in 1772, when it was called Plantation Number One. In 1775 General Benedict Arnold marched his troops through the village. They were headed up the Kennebec River toward the failed attack on Quebec. The town was incorporated in 1798 and named for Lord George Anson.

  • The mill villageWater power on the Carrabassett River turned North Anson into a small mill town. By 1886 the village had two sawmills plus three factories making boots and shoes.
