About Norridgewock, Maine

Norridgewock is a town of 3,278 people in Somerset County, on the Kennebec River. The land once belonged to the Norridgewock, a band of the Abenaki, whose village sat on Old Point, a spot that now belongs to Madison. British settlers arrived at Norridgewock Plantation in 1773, and two years later Benedict Arnold led his troops through on their march to fight at Quebec.

Norridgewock became a town on June 18, 1788. In 1809 it became the county seat of Somerset County, and its courthouse went up in 1820 and was remodeled in 1847. Norridgewock held the seat until 1871, when it moved to Skowhegan. Logs came down the Kennebec to a sawmill, whose hardwood lumber supplied local carriage and furniture factories, and the town also ran a gristmill and granite works.

  • The Battle of Norridgewock, 1724English colonists believed Father Sebastien Rale, the French missionary at the Norridgewock village since 1694, was urging attacks on British settlements. During Father Rale's War, soldiers rowed whaleboats from Fort Richmond to Taconic Falls, now Winslow, then crept overland and reached the village on August 23, 1724. The fight killed 26 warriors, including Rale himself, and wounded 14, while 150 survivors escaped to Quebec.
  • A 600-foot covered bridgeIn 1849 the town built a covered bridge across the Kennebec that ran 600 feet. Only one covered bridge in Maine was longer: the 792-foot span over the Penobscot from Bangor to Brewer, finished in 1846. Norridgewock's bridge stood until 1929, when it was replaced.
  • Two schools on Mercer RoadThe Norridgewock Female Academy, founded in 1837, held classes until 1860 in a brick Greek Revival building fronted by a temple portico, and since 1994 it has housed the Norridgewock Historical Society's museum. The Eaton School beside it was organized in 1856 and incorporated in 1874. Its Second Empire building, an early design by Lewiston architect Charles F. Douglas, also served the Masonic lodge, has belonged to Somerset Grange #18 since 1916 and joined the National Register in 1988.
  • Sophie May's 45 booksRebecca Sophia Clarke was born here in 1833 and studied at the Female Academy. Writing as Sophie May, she published 45 books, and the Little Prudy series sold best. From 1861 to 1906 she lived in the brick house that Congressman Cullen Sawtelle put up in 1845. She gave the town an 1841 brick building for a library in 1903. It's now a branch of the town's free public library, which grew from an 1810 lending society.
