About Smithfield, Maine
Smithfield became a town on February 29, 1840. That makes it the only Maine town ever incorporated on Leap Day. It took its name from the Rev. Henry Smith, who was one of its early settlers.
Smithfield was formed from parts of Mercer and Dearborn. At first it was called East Pond Plantation. The town sent about 70 men to fight for the Union in the Civil War, and 14 of them were lost.
