About Antelope, Montana
Antelope is a community of 74 people in Sheridan County, and it takes its name from Antelope Creek nearby. The town started in 1910 on the Great Northern Railway's branch line from Bainville to Scobey. That year, John and Richard Grayson put up a hardware store beside the Antelope Creek Lutheran Church.
A post office, a bank, a lumberyard and a saloon came soon after, and Antelope was incorporated in 1913. Through its first ten years the town grew along with the homesteaders settling the region, gaining a butcher shop, general mercantiles, a concrete plant and restaurants. Later, better roads to the south drew trade away, and the town that called itself the "Biggest Little City in Eastern Montana" declined.
- Antelope School, 1916 to 1978Antelope School opened its doors in 1916, and a gym was added in 1945. Fire destroyed the building on October 20, 1978, so its students finished that year at the Plentywood school. The class of 1979 graduated there but still claims Antelope as its alma mater, bringing the school's total to 522 graduates from 1922 to 1979.
- A Navy gunboat in 1967In 1967 the U.S. Navy gave the name Antelope to one of its gunboats. Crew members traveled to the town to mark the occasion, and some of Antelope's residents went out to Tacoma, Washington, to see the ship.
- A hundred years in 2010Antelope celebrated its centennial on July 3, 2010, with a parade, a lunch, a skit telling the town's history and a street dance. Children played on inflatable games in the park, and the bar opened again for the day as a place for old neighbors to gather.
