About Redstone, Montana

Redstone is an unincorporated community of 13 people in Sheridan County, on Montana Highway 5, 18 miles west of Plentywood. Homesteaders began coming to this part of Montana as early as 1900, and a small town grew up to serve them. In 1903 Olaf Bergh opened a store with a post office inside, and his wife, Mary, named the place Redstone for the red shale that lay in great amounts nearby.

The town shifted its location before it settled near the spot where Eagle Creek joins the Muddy River. It chose that ground because the Great Northern Railway ran a branch line across Sheridan County in 1913, and Redstone grew up beside the tracks.

  • A siding for the climbWest of Redstone the land rises for 10 miles toward Flaxville, which made a hard pull for a loaded train. The Great Northern built a long siding near Redstone, where crews split their trains so they could take the climb in parts.
  • A post office from 1903The post office that Olaf Bergh opened in his store in 1903 served Redstone until March 9, 2013. The community still has a ZIP code of its own, 59257.
