About Whitetail, Montana

Whitetail is an unincorporated village of 9 people in northern Daniels County, close to Montana's border with Canada. In the 1880s cowboys driving herds of cattle used the spot as a camp. Both the town and its creek were named for the white-tailed deer that live in large numbers along the creek bottoms.

The Soo Line Railroad reached Whitetail in 1914, and homesteaders soon followed and opened businesses. The railroad meant to push its tracks on toward Glacier National Park, but construction halted during World War I, so Whitetail stayed at the end of the line. The town peaked at more than 500 residents, then shrank to 248 by 1940 and to 125 by 1970.

  • Customs in a railroad carBecause the town sat so close to Canada, a customs office opened here in 1915, set up inside a railroad car. An immigration office joined it in 1931.
  • The border crossing closesThe small checkpoint at Whitetail handled about three travelers a day, yet it was slated for $15 million in upgrades through the economic stimulus plan of President Barack Obama. Instead, Canada shut its side to northbound traffic on April 1, 2011, and the U.S. side stopped southbound traffic on January 25, 2013.
  • Silo blowers and schoolsStarting in 1940, Whitetail's main industry was building silo blowers, until that plant eventually closed. Whitetail High School shut its doors in 1940, and the grade school followed in 1973.
  • One of 4 Whitetail ReservoirsA dam on Whitetail Creek holds back Whitetail Reservoir, one of 4 reservoirs in Montana that carry the name.
