About Peerless, Montana

Peerless is a small community in Daniels County, 19 miles west of Scobey. It began in 1914 under a different name, Tande, honoring Andrew Tande, who ran the store and served as postmaster. The little town did well at its first site for about eleven years.

In 1925 the Great Northern Railway built its branch line west from Scobey. The residents knew how much a place right on the tracks could gain, so they moved their homes and businesses over to the railroad. At the new site they gave the town a new name as well, and it has been Peerless ever since.

“The idea for the new name came from Schlitz-Peerless beer, the budding community's brew of choice.”

  • Tande's store, 1914Andrew Tande owned the store and kept the post office at the town's first location. When the post office opened in 1914, it carried his name, and the town was called Tande until the 1925 move.
  • Following the rails in 1925The Great Northern's branch line ran west out of Scobey in 1925. Rather than stay where they were, the people of Tande packed up their houses and shops and set them down beside the new tracks, where the town still stands 19 miles west of Scobey.
  • 23 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 23 people in Peerless. It is unincorporated, but it still has its own post office, ZIP code 59253, and the Daniels County Leader covers its news.
