About Homestead, Montana
Homestead is a community of 35 people in Sheridan County, Montana, on a railroad line 5.8 miles south-southwest of Medicine Lake. It began as Barford and was renamed Pederson in 1908, but that name caused confusion with the mail, so the residents picked Fort Peck instead.
The town of Poplar, where the Fort Peck Indian Agency had its headquarters, objected to the choice. The citizens tried again and settled on Homestead, in tribute to the families who had homesteaded the town and the country around it, and this time no one complained.
- Barford, for a cattle crossingThe first name came from a ford across Big Muddy Creek near the town. The N Bar N Cattle Ranch was using that crossing in 1893, years before the town had a store or a post office.
- Peder Pederson's store, 1908Peder Pederson opened the first business in town and became its first postmaster in 1908. He started calling the place Pederson, and the name lasted until the trouble with the mail sent residents looking for a new one.
- Post office until 1994Homestead kept its own post office until November 19, 1994. Even after it closed, the community held on to its own ZIP code, 59242.
