About Arnold Line, Mississippi
Arnold Line is a community of 2,333 people in Lamar County and part of the Hattiesburg metropolitan area. The city of Hattiesburg wraps around it on the north, east and south, and downtown Hattiesburg sits 5 miles to the east, over the line in Forrest County.
The place takes its name from a railroad spur that once carried logs and lumber for John Thomas Arnold's sawmill. Today the Hattiesburg Area Historical Society describes it as a neighborhood on the northwest side of Hattiesburg, and its children attend schools in the Lamar County School District.
- Named for a sawmill railroadArnold Line began as a branch rail line, built to serve the sawmill of John Thomas Arnold. The mill is gone, but the community that stands on that ground still carries the line's name.
- Land by the road crossingDuring the years the John Thomas Arnold Mill was operating, Owen Arnold bought a tract on the north side of the road crossing, tying a second member of the Arnold name to the land around the mill.
