About Petal, Mississippi
From Dunbar Rowland's 1907 encyclopedia of Mississippi history: "Petal, a postoffice of Perry county, 2 miles north of Hattiesburg, on the N. O. & N. E. R. R. It has three stores, two churches, a good school, two large saw mills, a cotton gin, and a population of 300."
From the Mississippi Rails: "On December 19, 1905 a mill site was leased In Petal, Perry County, from M. A. Smith, on the south side of the mill of the Louis Werner Saw Mill Company. The site was across the Leaf River from Hattiesburg, on the main line of the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad."
