About Arvada, Wyoming
From 1888 to 1891, a stage line from Sundance to Buffalo crossed the Powder River here by ferry. The town of Suggs grew up on the east bank in 1891. When the railroad arrived in 1892, its officials laid out Arvada on the west bank instead. Suggs was abandoned, and its post office moved to Arvada in 1893.
Coal lies at a shallow depth around Arvada. In the early days, local wells carried natural gas mixed into the drinking water. The water from those wells could catch fire and burn.
