About Ashland, Virginia

Ashland is a town of 7,565 people in Hanover County, 16 miles north of Richmond, and it is the only incorporated town in the county. In the 1840s the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad built a mineral springs resort here, with a racetrack, on ground people called The Slashes. That name may have meant swamp, but it also fit the little ravines that hard rains carved into the sandy clay.

The town was incorporated on February 19, 1858, covering just one square mile. It took the name Ashland from the Kentucky estate of Henry Clay, the statesman who was a Hanover County native. The Civil War left Ashland badly damaged, but in 1868 Randolph-Macon College, founded in 1830, moved to town. The college took over the old hotel buildings and put up new ones, and its arrival changed the course of the town.

  • Camp Ashland and Stonewall JacksonIn 1861 Confederate troops trained at Camp Ashland on the abandoned racetrack. In June 1862 Lt. John Henry Timberlake of Co. G, 4th Virginia Cavalry, whose home was at nearby Atlee, gave Gen. Stonewall Jackson a map and guided him through Ashland toward Cold Harbor.
  • Wartime house and hospitalGen. Stonewall Jackson is said to have spent a night in June 1862 at the MacMurdo House on South Center Street, beside the railroad tracks. A year later Ashland Baptist Church cared for wounded Confederate soldiers, and the building stands today as the Hanover Arts and Activities Center.
  • A trolley to RichmondJay Gould won a charter in 1905 for the Richmond & Chesapeake Bay Railway Co., and in 1907 it opened an electric interurban line to Richmond. That company failed, and at auction Oliver Jackson Sands Jr. and Jonathan Bryan bought the line, which they ran as the Richmond-Ashland Railway Company from 1919 to 1938. Growing car and bus travel helped end it. Its old route is now the Ashland Trolley Line Trail.
  • A town and college at warDuring World War I, Randolph-Macon students joined the Student Army Training Corps, and in 1918 the town held a Liberty Day Parade to raise money for war bonds. Before the 1940 draft began, Mayor J. Enos Ray became the first mayor in Virginia to volunteer for the U.S. Army. In World War II the Navy used the college as a preflight training center and taught hundreds of men engineering there.
  • Firefighters since the 1890sA devastating fire in 1893 led the town to form the Ashland Volunteer Fire Company, one of the oldest in Hanover County. Volunteers ran it on their own until 2016, when Hanover County Fire-EMS began adding its own service.
