About Attica, Indiana

Attica is a city of 3,036 people in Fountain County, on the Wabash River in Logan Township. George Hollingsworth laid out the town, and David Stump platted it in 1825. For years Attica competed with its neighbors Rob Roy, Williamsport and Covington to become the leading town in the area.

That contest ended in Attica's favor when the Wabash and Erie Canal was finished through town in 1847. Boats on the canal brought a good deal of growth, and Attica became an incorporated town in the summer of 1849.

  • A park in the ravineEarly residents relied on the ravine for spring water, for marl to make lime and for clay to make bricks. In 1906 local business and professional men organized and gave fifty-five acres to the city, which became the owner of the ravine and turned it into a public park.
  • The state song, 1897"On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away," Paul Dresser's tune of 1897, later became Indiana's state song. The place where he is thought to have composed it lies nearest to Attica, and the bridge that carries traffic over the Wabash River at Attica bears Dresser's name.
  • Vine joins the cityAs Attica grew, it took in nearby unincorporated communities such as Vine. Vine had a post office from 1895 until it closed in 1900, and one source says the name was picked because it was short. Today the southern end of North Vine School Road marks where Vine stood.
