About Independence, Indiana
From 1835 to 1845, Independence was a top trading point on the Wabash River. Farmers raised hogs, and pork packing grew into a good business. Pork and grain were shipped to New Orleans on flatboats. Enos Canutt printed the first newspaper here in 1844. It was called the Wabash Register.
A trading post stood on this spot as early as 1811. Zachariah Cicott later laid out the village. He was a French and Native American trader who scouted for General William Henry Harrison. The government had given him this land, known as Cicott's Reserve, for his services.
