About Ave Maria, Florida

Ave Maria is a planned community of 6,242 people in Collier County, 36 miles northeast of downtown Naples. Tom Monaghan, who founded Domino's Pizza, wanted a town to grow up around the Catholic university he had started. His Ave Maria Foundation joined Barron Collier Companies to form Ave Maria Development, which founded the town in 2005, and ground was broken for the university and town in February 2006.

To make the project work, the Florida legislature set up the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District, a special government with limited powers that provides the town's infrastructure. Ave Maria became the first town to be built under Florida's Rural Lands Stewardship Area program. In a 2007 CNN interview, Monaghan said his 10-year plan called for 25,000 residents, 11,000 homes and 5,000 university students. The 2020 census counted 6,242 people.

“a particular number of Catholics, particularly serious Catholics, would want to live around a really high-quality Catholic university.”

  • A college from MichiganAve Maria University began in 1998 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, under the name Ave Maria College. It moved to a temporary campus in Naples in 2003, while the Barron Collier family gave land for a permanent home. In 2007 students came to the new campus in the middle of town, and in 2008 the Bishop of Venice dedicated it. The university houses the Mother Teresa Museum.
  • A 30-foot AnnunciationThe parish church anchors the town square. The Hungarian sculptor MΓ‘rton VΓ‘rΓ³ spent three years carving the 30-foot marble Annunciation on its front, where the Archangel Gabriel greets the Virgin Mary with "Ave Maria." His "Good Shepherd" stands inside, cut from Carrara marble. The church's steel frame shows inside and out, and in 2008 the American Institute of Steel Construction honored it with an award.
  • Open to everyoneMonaghan hoped Catholics in particular would move here, and many streets carry Catholic names, such as Pope John Paul II Boulevard and Annunciation Circle. In 2007 he called the town "open to everyone, not just Catholics." A Baptist congregation, Fellowship Church, was founded in Ave Maria in 2017.
  • Growing to 5,000 acresBy 2023 Ave Maria was growing faster than any other U.S. community started in the 21st century. That June, Collier County commissioners added 1,000 acres, which brought the town to 5,000, the most county rules allow. The new land is planned mainly for single family homes, with a new town center and more shops.
