About Ayer, Massachusetts
Ayer is a town of 8,479 people in Middlesex County, carved from the south end of Groton. As late as 1843 this corner of Groton held only roughly a dozen farms. The Fitchburg Railroad arrived in 1844, and by 1848 a Union Station served several lines, so the village of South Groton was renamed Groton Junction.
A local debating society voted in 1855 for a separate town, and in 1871 a petition signed by 270 citizens went to the legislature. Writing in the Public Spirit, one resident suggested naming the town for Dr. James C. Ayer of Lowell, the medicine maker who later paid for its Town Hall. Shirley handed over its land east of the Nashua River in return for $500 toward its debt. Ayer became a town on February 14, 1871, and held its first town meeting on March 6.
“Ayer, as easy to spell and speak ; not likely to be confounded with that of any other town in the state, associated in the mind of every one with the sweet strains of Robert Burns”
- The great fire of 1872The new town's first library was the Literary Club's collection, which sat in Levi Sherwin's store. A fire tore through the village center in April 1872, destroying the White Church and all the books except roughly seventy-five then on loan. Between 1872 and 1898 Ayer rebuilt Main Street in brick and stone.
- An earthen pot by the brookBefore the railroads came, the Nashaway had a settlement here called Nonacoicus, on the brook that still carries that name. In 1698 Judge Samuel Sewall heard that the word meant an earthen pot. Major Willard built a house on this ground about 1671. It burned during King Philip's War, and people said it was the first house Groton lost in the attack. His old farm still marks the western half of Ayer's southern border.
- Two schoolhousesGroton built the Sandy Pond School in 1868 for its district 11, and the school closed in 1906 after streetcars arrived on Sandy Pond Road. Since then a local nonprofit has kept it as a museum and meeting place, and it was added to the National Register in 2017. The Pleasant Street School opened in 1893 to plans by the Boston architect Charles E. Parks. An addition in 1906 made it twice as large, and children studied there until 1984.
- Camp Devens in 1917In 1917 the federal government bought ground in Ayer, Harvard, Lancaster and Shirley and opened Camp Devens there. The camp honored Charles Devens, a jurist who had served as a general in the Civil War. During World War I more than 100,000 soldiers trained there or passed through. The fort shut down in 1996, and the next day it reopened as a much smaller reserve training area.
- A ski jump for one winterDuring the Great Depression, in 1935, a wooden ski jump was built on Pingry Hill near the Willows. Skiers used it for just one winter. Wind brought down part of the jump during the summer of 1936, and no one ever rebuilt it, so in the years that followed local residents hauled away some of its lumber.
