About Shirley, Massachusetts: Home, Street by Street

In 1793, the Shakers founded a religious village in Shirley. Members shared their property, lived together, stayed celibate and refused to fight in wars. They became known for plain buildings and furniture. The movement peaked in the 1840s, and the village closed in 1908.

English settlers arrived around 1720, when the land was part of Groton. In 1753 Shirley split off as its own town. It took the name of William Shirley, the governor of Massachusetts at the time.
