About Townsend, Massachusetts
Townsend honors Charles Townshend, an English secretary of state who opposed the Tories. At first the town spelled its name the same way he did. After the hated Townshend Acts of 1767, patriotic residents dropped the h. The new spelling was official by 1780.
Townsend was settled in 1676 and became a town in 1732. Gristmills and sawmills went up in 1733. They later became cooperage plants, making barrels from the timber of the thick forests around town.
