About Littleton Common, Massachusetts
Littleton Common is a census-designated place of 3,065 people in the eastern part of the town of Littleton, in Middlesex County. It grew from 2,789 people in 2010. Beaver Brook runs north through its western side on the way to the Merrimack River, and Long Pond lies in its southern part.
- A debt forgivenReuben Houghton, a Littleton country trader and storekeeper, lost his money when a partnership in a Boston business failed. Reuben Hoar, a well-to-do farmer, gave him money and a plan to pay off his debts, and when the time came to be repaid, Hoar refused to take the money.
- A library born of kindnessReuben Houghton's son, William Stevens Houghton, became a wholesale boot and shoe merchant on Pearl Street and one of Boston's richest men. In 1884 he offered to pay for a free library in his father's town of Littleton. His children, Elizabeth and Clement S. Houghton, built the Houghton Memorial Building in 1894 and 1895 and gave it to the town.
- The town's first burying groundThe Old Burying Ground sits on King Street, a block west of the common. For Littleton's first hundred years it was the only burying ground the town used. About 340 markers stand over the graves of more than 400 early residents, and nineteen Revolutionary War veterans and sixteen veterans of earlier wars are said to rest there.
