About Azalea Park, Florida

Azalea Park is an unincorporated community of 14,141 people in Orange County, part of the Orlando metropolitan area. Its streets and houses sit on ground that was a private airfield in the late 1930s, and Orlando Executive Airport still lies along its western edge.

Wellborn C. Phillips bought the old airfield in 1951, and his company, Phillips Properties, broke ground on Azalea Park in May 1952. The subdivision of 1,100 homes grew into an $8 million project, and as families moved in, five churches, a swimming pool and a shopping center went up for them.

  • A grass runway in the 1930sJ. W. Cannon owned a private airport of 400 acres in the late 1930s, beside Lake Barton Road, which is now Semoran Boulevard. Small planes took off from its grass runway, and Cannon taught flying there. In 1940 the Florida Aeronautical and Supply Company bought the field, and it was sold again in 1951, when Phillips bought it and turned it into a neighborhood.
  • Named for the azaleaThe community took its name from the azalea, a shrub of the rhododendron family whose blooms come in many colors. In 1955, three years after the first homes went up, the post office recognized Azalea Park as a branch of Orlando.
