About Goldenrod, Florida

Goldenrod is a community of 13,431 people in Orange and Seminole counties, in central Florida. Its first settlers came in the 1870s, and even though the land was hard to homestead, many of them planted orange groves. The freeze of 1894 destroyed that early start, and many of those families gave up and left Goldenrod.

  • The Dinky LineThe Osceola and Lake Jesup Railroad was built in 1890, and in 1908 a station opened in Goldenrod. From then on, residents could ride easily to Winter Park and Orlando. Locals called the little railroad the Dinky Line because it creaked and screeched on every curve and seemed ready to fall apart. The trains often had to stop for repairs.
  • Suburban homes from 1926James F. Wellman founded the Goldenrod Corporation in March 1926, and the company began building suburban homes here. Goldenrod had been a settlement of orange growers, and Wellman's company made it a place where families could live within reach of Winter Park and Orlando.
