About Barclay, New Jersey
Barclay is a community of 4,656 people within Cherry Hill, in Camden County, and it takes its name from the Barclay Farm. In 1684 John Kay bought 100 acres from Francis Collins along the northern bank of the North Branch of Cooper's Creek, and that tract later held the farm. The Kays were the first family to settle in the area now called Cherry Hill.
- Quaker meetings, 1685 to 1707In 1685, with the approval of the Quarterly Meeting of Friends at Burlington, Quakers organized a meeting at John Kay's house. Friends kept gathering in the Kay house until 1707. That same year of 1685, Kay, counted among the leading men of the early settlement, won a seat in the General Assembly of West New Jersey.
- With the Barclays until 1974Kay's land later became part of Joseph W. Cooper's farm, and it came to Charles Barclay through his marriage into the Cooper family. The farmhouse there was built in 1816, and it stayed in Barclay hands until Cherry Hill Township bought it in 1974. Today the township runs the Barclay Farm House on 32 acres and opens it to visitors to show Cherry Hill's years as farm country.
- Counted on its own since 2010Until 2000 the census counted Barclay as part of the Barclay-Kingston area. That area was later split in two, and by the 2010 census Barclay and Kingston Estates were each counted as places of their own.
