About Kingston Estates, New Jersey

Kingston Estates is a community of 6,322 people in Camden County, inside Cherry Hill. For years the Census Bureau counted it together with its neighbor as the Barclay-Kingston area, and the two were later divided, so Kingston Estates has been a census-designated place of its own since the 2010 count.

The neighborhood was the work of builder Harry Goodwin and his two sons, Dick and Howard. In January 1956, American Builder magazine told how the family solved problems that held back other builders, and how their solutions helped open the surrounding land to new homes.

  • Its own sewer companySewage disposal was a barrier to building here, so the Goodwins formed a public utility of their own, the Delaware Township Sewerage Corporation. Once the first 300 homes were finished, they enlarged the plant and let two other builders use it. That shared plant made 1,000 acres of new land ready for houses.
  • Water, buses and a school siteThe Goodwins did more than put up houses. They piped water in from the Haddonfield system, a mile and a quarter away, and they set up a bus service for residents. They also offered ten acres of land for a school, which would be the first new school the township had seen in a long time.
