About Golden Triangle, New Jersey
Golden Triangle is a census-designated place of 4,769 people inside Cherry Hill Township, in Camden County. Route 70, the old Marlton Pike, runs along one side, and Cooper Landing Road, Cuthbert Boulevard and Chapel Avenue roughly close the shape. Before Cherry Hill had its name, this land lay in Delaware Township, a farming township with peach orchards along Chapel Avenue. Off that road, a farmhouse sat on a hill at the end of a long drive lined with cherry trees, and that hill became the emblem of the township as houses replaced its farms.
- A race track from the 1940sEugene Mori Sr. of Vineland, who sold cars, ran a dairy farm and worked as a banker, built Garden State Park in the early 1940s. He paid for it partly by selling shares to his friends and neighbors. The track drew people and money, and it helped the farmland of Delaware Township become the suburb of Cherry Hill.
- The grandstand fire of 1977On April 14, 1977, more than 10,000 fans were at Garden State Park when fire broke out in its wooden grandstand. In about 10 minutes the flames ran the full length of the building and destroyed it. The owners rebuilt with a grandstand of glass and steel, and the track opened again in April 1985.
- A high school by the orchardsDelaware Township High School opened in September 1956 on Chapel Avenue, facing the peach orchards. Its first students were seventh, eighth and ninth graders gathered from all over the township, and its first class graduated in 1960. When the township took the name Cherry Hill, the school followed, and in 1963 it became Cherry Hill High School.
