About Beach Haven West, New Jersey

Beach Haven West is a community of 4,143 people in Stafford Township, Ocean County, on the Manahawkin bayfront. The ground it stands on was once the Remsen meadows, about 500 acres of salt marsh and meadow, and in 1950 the brothers Herbert and Jerome Shapiro bought it at an advertised sale where they were the only bidders.

The Shapiros towed a dredge up from North Carolina to cut saltwater lagoons through the marsh, and they stacked banks of meadow sod to keep the fill in place. The first section opened in 1957, with lagoons and cul-de-sacs between Morris Boulevard and Jennifer Lane. A second phase between Jonathan Drive and Walter Boulevard was done by the early 1960s, and by the 1970s the homes reached out along Mill Creek Road toward East Point.

  • Lagoon homes for $6,990The first model home opened on Selma Drive in 1957. It was an expandable Cape Cod with two bedrooms, an attic that could take dormers and an outdoor shower, painted in pastels like canary yellow, pistachio green and bright pink. In the 1950s a waterfront lot with a house cost $6,990, with financing at $66 a month, and most lots ran 50 feet along the lagoon and 80 feet back to the street.
  • Finished by 1986The Shapiros later sold the rest of their land to Lincoln Properties, another shore developer. Lincoln carried the Mill Creek Road section down to Barnegat Bay at East Point, dug the southern lagoons off Newell Avenue called Village Harbour, and built Colony Lakes by 1986. Every Lincoln house put the bedrooms downstairs and the living rooms on the second floor.
  • The lagoons never dugThe builders meant to push the community past the Mill Creek delta. They partly dredged about a dozen lagoons there, and an odd bend in Newell Avenue still follows the plan. Without permits, and with the EPA and the 1970 Wetlands Protection Act pushing back, the work stopped, and those lagoons were never finished.
  • The pool at the rec centerThrough the 1950s and 1960s, social life in Beach Haven West centered on a recreation center at the corner where Morris Boulevard, Jonathan Drive, Jeffrey Drive and Jennifer Lane meet, with a clubhouse, boat slips and a swimming pool. By the 1980s the pool had been filled in and the clubhouse torn down, and houses went up on the site. The Civic Association carries on today from a new home on Mill Creek Road.
