About Stafford, New Jersey

Stafford is a township of 28,617 people in southern Ocean County, reaching from Barnegat Bay west to the Burlington County line. A royal charter created it on March 3, 1750, from parts of Shrewsbury Township, back when this land still belonged to Monmouth County. It was named after Staffordshire, England. The state counted it among its first 104 townships in 1798, and it joined the new Ocean County on February 15, 1850.

Between 1846 and 1899 Stafford gave up land to four new towns: Union Township in 1846 (now Barnegat), Eagleswood in 1874, Long Beach City in 1894 (now Surf City) and Long Beach Township in 1899. For a long time it stayed rural, and Manahawkin was its only real downtown. That changed in the 1950s, when Beach Haven West and Ocean Acres were built as resort communities and the Garden State Parkway was finished. By the 1980s many of those summer houses had become homes people lived in all year.

  • Founders Day since 1964Founders Day started in 1964, the year New Jersey marked its 300th anniversary, and comes back every June. The day brings a hometown parade and pie-eating contests, along with pageants that choose a Little Town Crier, a Little Miss Stafford, a Jr. Miss Stafford and a Miss Stafford. Fireworks end the night.
  • From runway to churchThe Manahawkin Executive Airport once sat along Route 72. It closed in the early 1990s, and a Walmart and a Pathmark went up on the land. One piece of the runway lasted into the 2000s, until a Catholic church, St. Mary's of the Pines, rose there beside a new school, All Saints Regional.
  • A time capsule for 2070In July 2021 the township buried a time capsule, set to be opened in 2070. Officials and residents filled it with items from 2020 that show what life in Stafford was like during the COVID-19 pandemic.
