About Manahawkin, New Jersey

Manahawkin is a community of 2,413 people in Stafford Township, Ocean County. Writing in 1890, the county historian Edwin Salter placed it among the first spots in Ocean County to be settled. By 1758 its people had built a church here, the oldest in the county.

The town grew steadily in recent decades. The census counted 2,004 people in 2000 and 2,303 in 2010, and the 2020 count of 2,413 was the largest in its history. Today Manahawkin is the way onto Long Beach Island, because the only road to the island's beach resorts leaves from here and crosses Manahawkin Bay to Ship Bottom.

  • Ocean County's first churchThe Baptist Church at Manahawkin was standing by 1758, and tradition holds that it was open to every denomination. Quakers and Presbyterians held their meetings inside. John Murray, who founded the Universalist movement in America, preached from its pulpit as well. The Manahawkin Baptist Church is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Good land for cornSalter wrote that the name came from Native words for good land, or good land for corn, and that it was once spelled Mannahocking. The Lenape meaning has long been given as "land of good corn," but recent scholars argue it means "fertile land sloping into the water."
  • A high school for the seaManahawkin is home to the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science. The county's vocational school system runs it as a specialized high school, and its students study the ocean, the bays and the environment around them.
