About Ocean Acres, New Jersey
Ocean Acres is a community of 18,185 people in Ocean County, split between Stafford Township and Barnegat Township. Developers started it in the early 1960s on a big tract west of the Garden State Parkway, and they brought possible buyers out to the land by bus. The plan worked: 2,000 lots sold in the first year, and buyers could pick from three house designs, two ranches and a bi-level.
Building stayed slow through the 1970s and 1980s. Few streets were paved, most houses were summer homes, and a state ban on construction west of the Parkway meant that a community planned for 5,500 lots still had under 800 homes. In the 1990s the state lifted the ban and sewer lines went in, so local builders put up thousands of new houses before the decade was out.
- Model homes on Route 72The first three model homes stood on New Jersey Route 72, west of where Southern Ocean Medical Center stands today. All three are still there, now used as businesses.
- A lake with a beachEarly residents had a lakefront park near the Nautilus Drive entrance, later leveled when the lake was enlarged. A second park off Buccaneer Lane offered an 18-hole golf course, a pool, tennis and basketball courts and a bathing beach. That pool no longer exists, and the beach shut for several years in the 1990s before it reopened, and the lake still draws people to fish and kayak.
- The Barnegat side opens upEnvironmental concerns held back building on the Barnegat side for years. Work picked up in the 2000s after Nautilus Boulevard, long a missing link, was finished, and the Walters Group became the first builder there; one early offer threw in a free Toyota Yaris with a house. In 2010 Parkway exit 67 was redesigned to send the southbound ramp onto the Lighthouse Drive entrance, and the Barnegat section grew quickly in the 2010s.
- Elementary school in 1999Ocean Acres Elementary School opened its doors in 1999. At first it taught only kindergarten through second grade.
