About Ocean, Ocean County, New Jersey

Waretown, a community in Ocean Township, took its name from Abraham Weair. He came around 1737 with a colony of Rogerine Baptists and built a sawmill. When the colony moved away eleven years later, Weair stayed on and became a leading member of the community.

Waretown built ships through the 1700s and 1800s. Local builders shaped schooners, sloops and sneakboxes from native white cedar. Many sea captains raised stately homes on lots facing the bay.

  • Famous visitorsWaretown won wide fame as a place to hunt and fish. Visitors who came for the sport included Presidents Grover Cleveland and William McKinley, Babe Ruth and Buffalo Bill Cody.
