About Beattystown, New Jersey

Beattystown is a village in Mansfield Township, Warren County, on the Musconetcong River. George Beatty built a mill here around 1762, and the river turned its wheel with strong, steady water power. For many years the settlement was known simply as Beatty's Mills, after the owner of that first mill.

The village was already settled when the Revolutionary War began, and Stewart Martin kept its tavern. Some of the soldiers captured from General Burgoyne's army were marched from Saratoga toward the South, and the ones who stopped in the village were fed at Martin's tavern.

  • Almost named BirdsburgElisha and Edward Bird were among the earliest settlers, and they wanted the village renamed Birdsburg. Other settlers opposed the change, so the name of the mill owner stayed with the place.
  • Among New Jersey's 10 most endangeredPreservation New Jersey has named Beattystown to its list of the state's 10 historic places most at risk. The old mill village grew up around George Beatty's mill on the Musconetcong.
  • 4,701 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 4,701 people in Beattystown, an unincorporated community within Mansfield Township.
