About Hackettstown, New Jersey

Hackettstown is a town of 10,248 people in Warren County, set in a valley along the Musconetcong River. It carries the name of Samuel Hackett, an early settler who held a large amount of land here. The New Jersey Legislature made it a town on March 9, 1853, carving it out of Independence Township, and its line with Mansfield Township shifted through land swaps in 1857, 1860, 1872 and 1875.

Much of the push for incorporation came from William Johnson, who with his brother George had run the W.L. & G.W Johnson dry goods store in town since 1839. Both brothers helped found Union Cemetery. George also sat on the boards of the Hackettstown National Bank and the town's water board.

“contributed liberally to the liquid refreshments on the christening of a new hotel, in order to secure the name which, before this, had been Helms' Mills or Musconetcong.”

It grew into a junior college for women, then a four-year college, and became Centenary University in 2016. A professional stage company has worked on campus since 1985, and in 1992 it started a series that gave women playwrights workshops, grants and premieres.
