About Independence, New Jersey
Independence is a township of 5,469 people in Warren County, New Jersey. It was carved out of Hardwick Township on November 11, 1782, when this land still belonged to Sussex County, and its name honors American independence. The state legislature then made it one of New Jersey's first 104 townships on February 21, 1798.
When Warren County was formed on November 20, 1824, most of Independence went with it, while the rest joined Green Township in Sussex County. The township later gave up more land, first to Hackettstown on March 9, 1853, and then to Allamuchy Township on April 4, 1873.
- Vienna, once CumminstownThe Cummins family bought land here in 1755, and the village that grew up around them was called Cumminstown. Around 1828 it was renamed Vienna for the Austrian capital, because Austria was the family's homeland, and the Cummins family stayed until 1880. By 1882 the village counted 450 residents and had its own post office and hotel, along with a foundry and a factory making chairs.
- Iron ore at Jenny JumpEarly farmers turned forest into hayfields, grain fields and pasture, sawed timber into lumber and ground their grain at mills. Iron ore drew settlers too, and in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries some of it was dug around Jenny Jump Mountain. The mines, the iron foundries that came later and the Morris Canal have all since disappeared.
- Draining the Great MeadowsThe Great Meadows and the township's brooks feed the Pequest River, which runs slowly southwest to the Delaware at Belvidere. Farmers tried many times to drain the meadow, and once ditches finally carried the water off, the land became ground for commercial vegetable farming. Its produce left by wagon, then by small trucks and rail freight, and later by large trailer trucks.
- A station kept wholeThe Great Meadows Railroad Station stands beside the abandoned Lehigh and Hudson Railway. It is the one nineteenth-century station still preserved along with every one of its structures, and it joined the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 1989.
- Bobby Caldwell's homeAmong his other songs was "The Next Time I Fall," a number one record for Amy Grant and Peter Cetera.
