About Bells, Tennessee

Bells is a city of 2,463 people in Crockett County, just north of the South Fork of the Forked Deer River. Settlement here began in the late 1820s on land that two brothers, John and William Bell, had acquired. In 1855 a town was laid out on the Bell land and named Bells Depot. It was incorporated in 1868, and in 1880 the town dropped "Depot" and became plain Bells.

  • Bigger than the county seatBells grew up as a railroad town, and for many years it was larger than Alamo, the county seat, making it the biggest town in Crockett County. Even so, it counted only 919 people in 1940. Cotton was a mainstay of the county, and Bells still had a cotton gin running in the mid-1990s.
  • The West Tennessee Okra FestivalBells was the home of the West Tennessee Okra Festival, held every August when okra season was at its peak. The festival brought a horse show, a beauty pageant, a street carnival and other shows to town. It is no longer held.
  • Home of PictsweetPictsweet Farms has its headquarters in Bells. Three generations of the Tankersley family own and run the company, which sells frozen vegetables to grocery stores and restaurants across the country, and it is one of the major employers in the Bells area.
