About Berwyn Heights, Maryland

Berwyn Heights is a town of 3,345 people in Prince George's County, Maryland, bordered by College Park, Greenbelt and Riverdale Park. Starting in the 1870s, Washington, D.C. kept growing, and railroad suburbs spread across the land northeast of the city. This town began as one of them, and its first plat called it Charlton Heights.

In 1888 the Charlton Heights Improvement Company built houses in the new subdivision to attract buyers. In 1896 an act of the General Assembly incorporated the town and gave it the name Berwyn Heights, making it the seventh incorporated municipality in Prince George's County. Each year the town celebrates its founding with Berwyn Heights Day.

  • The O'Dea House, 1888The O'Dea House is one of the homes the Charlton Heights Improvement Company put up in 1888 to get the subdivision started. It joined the National Register in 1987.
  • Houses from mail-order plansSeveral of the town's first houses still stand near Ruatan Street. Four of them were built from plans bought through the mail from a New York City firm, R. W. Shoppell's Cooperative Building Plan Association.
  • Three acorns on the sealBerwyn Heights adopted its town seal in 1967, with three acorns on it. In 1986 the town was named a Tree City USA.
  • A Maryland first in 2005Once the General Assembly gave its approval, Berwyn Heights became the first municipality in Maryland to set up a public safety taxing district, in 2005. A special tax on businesses pays for one full-time police officer and helps keep police on duty around the clock.
