About Adelphi, Maryland

Adelphi is a community of 16,823 people in Prince George's County, along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River. In the 1790s Issachar and Mahlon Scholfield, Quaker brothers from Pennsylvania, bought land beside the stream and built a flour mill there around 1796. They named their property Adelphia, from the Greek word for brotherhood, and called the mill Adelphi, Greek for brothers.

The mill ground flour for more than a century before it shut down in 1912. The county park commission took it over in 1951, cleared out the old milling machinery in 1954 and turned the building into a place for recreation. When the new subdivisions that grew up after World War II joined forces in the mid-1950s, they chose the old mill's name for their whole community.

  • Part of the Green Hill estateIn the 19th century George Washington Riggs bought up much of the land northeast of Washington, D.C., and joined it into one large property called Green Hill, which lay in the Chillum Manor district. Present-day Adelphi was part of that estate. Houses went up quickly only after World War II.
  • Mother Jones died here in 1930Mary Harris "Mother" Jones, the labor organizer, died in 1930 at Walter and Lillie May Burgess's farm, close to where Powder Mill Road meets Riggs Road. The Maryland State Highway Administration later put up a marker at the site, and in 2000 a new elementary school in Adelphi opened under her name.
  • Army research since 1971The Harry Diamond Laboratories opened in 1971 on 137 acres at the north end of Adelphi. The site carries on today as the Adelphi Laboratory Center of the Army Research Laboratory, which the Army calls its corporate research laboratory.
  • The Adelphi PoolSince the late 1950s a private pool beside George Washington Cemetery on Riggs Road has been a gathering place for the neighborhood. Members and their guests come for swimming lessons and swim team meets, and the pool is known for its long water slide and its basketball hoop.
