About Hyattsville, Maryland

Hyattsville is a city of 21,187 people in Prince George's County, just outside Washington, D.C. In the 1720s John Beall bought land here and set up Beall Town. More settlers came after the turnpike between Washington and Baltimore, today's US 1, opened in 1812, and again after the B&O Railroad's Washington Branch line arrived in 1835.

Christopher Clark Hyatt bought his first piece of land in the area in 1845. He opened a store and began carrying the mail, and when he applied to be postmaster in 1859 he gave the community its name, Hyattsville. After the Civil War, Hyatt and other landowners split their farms into lots and sold them, so the town grew. Hyattsville became an incorporated city on April 7, 1886.

“In 1892, Hyattsville gained international fame when it became the first American city to institute the single-tax system, taxing only land and not personal property.”
City of Hyattsville
  • The single tax in courtHyattsville's Board of Commissioners set the property tax to fall only on land, not on the buildings and other improvements on it. Opponents sued. After an appeal, the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled that the tax broke the state constitution and threw it out.
  • Voting at 16 since 2015In January 2015 the city council amended the charter so residents could vote in city elections at 16, which few places in the United States allow. In December 2016 the city went further and let residents who are not citizens vote in municipal elections.
  • A flying saucer libraryThe Hyattsville Branch Library opened in 1964 as the first library building the Prince George's County Memorial Library System built itself. Its original mid-century modern design greeted visitors with a googie-style entryway shaped like a flying saucer.
  • An electric patrol car firstThe Hyattsville City Police Department put a fully marked, all-electric Chevrolet Bolt on patrol in 2017, the first police force in the country to do so. The department later added an electric police motorcycle and six public charging stations that anyone can use for free.
