About Langley Park, Maryland
Langley Park is a community of 20,126 people in Prince George's County, on the county's northwest edge along the Montgomery County line. In 1921 Frederick McCormick-Goodhart, a British barrister, and his wife Henrietta bought 565 acres of farmland. They named the estate after the Goodhart family home in Kent, England. In 1924 the couple spent $100,000 to build a 28-room Georgian Revival mansion, and the architect George Oakley Totten Jr. drew its plans.
During and right after World War II, the Washington area badly needed homes, so the estate was divided and built up as a planned community. Starting in 1949, builders put up 1,542 garden apartments along what is now 14th Avenue. At the same time, M.T. Broyhill and Sons began 600 single-family houses priced near $10,000 on a 200-acre tract. Both were finished and lived in by June 1951. The last big piece, 25 acres around the mansion, sold for $900,000 in 1963 and became the 400-unit Willowbrook Apartments.
- Cricket on the lawnIn the late 1930s and early 1940s, the couple's son Leander McCormick-Goodhart worked at the British embassy as personal assistant to Ambassador Lord Lothian and ran American Relief to Great Britain. As a result, the estate became a gathering place for embassy events. The Washington Cricket Club played its games here, and a British Relief Country Fair was held on the grounds in June 1941.
- Seminary, school, then CASAThe Eudist Order bought the mansion and its grounds in 1947 for a seminary. After the 1963 sale, the house served as Willowbrook Montessori School until the early 1990s. CASA de Maryland, founded in 1985 to help immigrant families, signed a lease to restore it in 2005 and bought it in 2009. The mansion at 8151 15th Ave. joined the National Register on August 29, 2008, and it now holds a $31 million Multicultural Community Center.
- A school of 45 countriesLangley Park Elementary first opened its doors in 1950, at the corner of Merrimac Drive and 15th Avenue, and today it is called Langley Park-McCormick School. In 1988 Leander McCormick-Goodhart was invited to a school event and sent a $10,000 gift. That same year, 60 percent of its 610 students had been born abroad, in 45 different countries, and together they spoke 27 languages.
- From boom town to gatewayBy 1955, some 200,000 people lived within 3 miles, and the area was billed as the fastest growing trade area around Washington. Young families came first, and for a time the neighborhood was largely Jewish. In the 1980s, newcomers arrived from El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Jamaica, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Nigeria and elsewhere. By 1990 the area was 40 percent Hispanic.
