About Beverly Hills, Florida
Beverly Hills is a community of 9,961 people in Citrus County, up from 8,445 in 2010. It began with Sam Kellner, a Jewish businessman from New York who made his money in tires during the 1930s and 1940s and then turned to construction and real estate. Around 1960 he bought 3,500 acres of former cattle land in the county's interior, between Holder and Hernando, and called his new venture Beverly Hills.
Because the land was rural and inland, Kellner could sell plain one-story houses at prices that working class retirees could afford, mostly to buyers from New York and Detroit. The idea caught on quickly. Twenty homes stood in the spring of 1962 and around 400 by the end of 1965, and by 1972 some 4,500 residents lived in 2,200 homes.
- Model homes on Long IslandKellner pitched his Florida community to New Yorkers thinking about retirement. In 1962 he built two full-size sample houses in Hicksville, on Long Island, where some 2,500 people who might buy came through each week.
- A 1934 fire engineKellner organized a volunteer fire and ambulance corps for the new community. When the volunteer fire department in Westbury, New York, retired its 1934 American LaFrance engine, known as "Old Reliable," Kellner bought it for the Beverly Hills corps.
- Largest in the county by 1975By 1975 Beverly Hills held about 3,000 homes and more than 5,000 residents, which made it the largest community in Citrus County. It was among the first planned retirement communities in Central Florida. Kellner's Rolling Oaks Corporation owned most of the property here that wasn't homes, such as a concrete plant and a lumberyard close by.
- Sold by Kellner in 1980Kellner sold the subdivision to Beverly Hills Development Corp. in 1980. Nine years later it passed to Morrison Homes, a home builder based in Atlanta, which built and sold houses here until it stopped in 1999.
