About Big Pine, California

From the California A Guide to the Golden State: "BIG PINE, 16.5 m. (4,002 alt., 200 pop.), is a quiet village whose wooden sidewalks are shaded by great oaks and maples. Catering to motorists and the outfitting of fishing, packing, and hiking parties bound for the high Sierra constitute its chief sources of income."

From the Historical Marker Database: "Zurich was the main railroad station for Big Pine and points east. Its name was changed to Zurich in 1923 because the eastern slope of the Sierra reminded local resident Emelie Nikolaus of her native Switzerland."
