About Blue Hills, Connecticut
Blue Hills is a neighborhood in Hartford County that reaches across a city line, taking in the northwest corner of Hartford and the southeast corner of Bloomfield. The Bloomfield side counted 2,762 people in the 2020 census, and with the Hartford side included, roughly 10,000 people live here. Most residents are West Indian or African American.
Soon after settlers reached Windsor, they sent men west to explore the wilderness, and the scouts came back saying the land was good enough for three families. In 1642 Edward Messenger put up the first house in today's Bloomfield, at the spot where Blue Hills Avenue now crosses Ledyard Avenue. He didn't receive a deed from the land's Native owners until 1661, and the wide area around his home came to be called Messenger's Farm.
- Three high hills by 1666Messenger's homestead did not stay alone for long. By 1666 three more houses had gone up on the farm, each set on one of three high hills.
- New England's largest Protestant churchThe First Cathedral, the biggest Protestant church in all of New England, stands in Blue Hills.
- The University of HartfordBlue Hills holds a university along with several schools. The University of Hartford, Weaver High School and the private Watkinson School are all in the neighborhood, as are Annie Fisher, Mark Twain, Sarah J. Rawson and Martin Luther King Jr. elementary schools.
