About Blue Springs, Missouri
Blue Springs is a Jackson County city whose name recalls a hillside spring feeding a branch of the Little Blue River. Its early settlement developed around water and supplies before the community shifted toward a railroad station. Today the city covers 22.35 square miles.
- Named for a SpringBlue Springs was named for water that emerged from a hillside and flowed into a tributary of the Little Blue River.
- Post Office RootsFranklin Smith established the first post office in 1845 and named it for the springs.
- Railroad ShiftThe settlement moved its center east toward a new railroad station, seeking the commerce expected to follow.
- Home Rule CharterBlue Springs adopted a constitutional charter in April 1994 and uses a mayor-council-administrator form of government.
