About Grain Valley, Missouri
Grain Valley is a city of 15,627 people in Jackson County, 23 miles east of downtown Kansas City. In 1878 the Chicago and Alton Railroad laid its tracks through this part of the county and passed by the older settlements of Pink Hill and Stony Point. Residents and shopkeepers from both places packed up and moved to the new line so they could share in the trade the trains would bring.
Their new town took shape in the late 1870s beside the tracks. A post office called Grain Valley opened in 1879, and it has stayed open under that name ever since.
- Named for the grain fieldsThe founders picked a name that simply described the farm country around them. According to the State Historical Society of Missouri, the town sits in a fertile grain-growing valley, and the name says exactly that.
- A school district that doubledAs Kansas City's suburbs spread east, the Grain Valley R-V School District grew from 1,659 students in 2000 to more than 4,000 in 2015. Its students now attend Grain Valley High School, two middle schools or one of four elementary schools. The district's boundaries also reach into Oak Grove, Blue Springs and the unincorporated eastern part of Jackson County.
- Headquarters for truckersThe Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has its headquarters in Grain Valley.
