About Bonney Lake, Washington
Bonney Lake is a city of 22,487 people in Pierce County, and it ranks fifth in size among the county's cities. Settlement here dates to 1853. The city is named for William P. Bonney, who worked to save the history of the settlers who came to the area.
Bonney Lake did not become a town until nearly a century after settlement began. Residents first set up a co-op to bring electricity and tap water to their homes, and the town was incorporated on February 28, 1949, when just 327 people lived here. From 1952 to 1972 there were several attempts to undo the incorporation, but none succeeded, and the town grew into one of the state's fastest growing cities.
- Markers on the Naches TrailBetween 2009 and 2015 the city and the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society put up 13 historical markers. One of them marks the Naches Trail, a route that immigrants and soldiers traveled heavily in the later half of the 1800s.
- Museum in old city hallThe Bonney Lake Historical Society was founded in 2001. It runs a museum and archive in the building that once served as city hall, near Allan Yorke Park, and its collection holds 5,500 cataloged items.
- The Labor Day fires of 2020In 2020 the Washington Labor Day fires burned across 500 acres here, and people in an estimated 2,500 residences had to leave their homes. The evacuation began on Tuesday, September 8, and ended the following Sunday, September 13.
