About Alderton, Washington
Alderton is a community of 3,274 people in Pierce County. It sits in the Puyallup River Valley between Sumner and Orting. This valley is home ground of the Puyallup and Muckleshoot tribes, and many tribes came here to trade. Emigrant wagons first reached Pierce County in 1853. The Naches Trail, a shortcut off the Oregon Trail, ran through Alderton on the Military Road. Here it split, with one branch going to Olympia and one to Seattle.
Orson Annis and his family settled here in 1869. They cleared ground for hops and later planted fruit trees. In 1877 the Northern Pacific built its line through the valley, and Annis hoped his homestead would grow into a town. He named it Alderton for the thick alders, which fed the trains their wood. He ran the first store, sold the tickets, served as postmaster and helped start the first school. Alderton got its post office on April 12, 1878, and kept it until October 9, 1964.
- Clay City brick in 1915By 1915 Alderton had grown past Sumner, its neighbor to the north. That year the town built a school and a gym out of Clay City brick, which was made nearby. Classes met there until 1961. The Alderton School is on the National Register. Its empty buildings still stand on Military Road at 96th Street East, and the old General Store faces them from the south.
- Farms since 1930 and 1938Two old farms still work the valley. The Spooner Farm started in 1930, and the Cavelti Farm in 1938. In February 2015 the Tacoma News Tribune said two families, Sidhu and Alderton LLC, had bought 116 acres close to the Puyallup River and Ball Creek. Alderton LLC grows mostly Christmas trees, and Sidhu grows fruits and vegetables.
- Sirens for Mount RainierAlderton stands on layer after layer of old lahar mud, about 30 miles from Mount Rainier. Scientists think a lahar from the mountain would need only 30 minutes to hit Orting, and an hour to get to Alderton. To give people warning, the Mount Rainier Volcano Lahar Warning System has put sirens all around the area. Sensors on the mountain set them off.
