About Bootjack, California
Bootjack began as a mining camp after gold was found in 1849. It stayed small next to Agua Fria, Mormon Bar and other boomtowns. By the 1870s, the camp had become a stagecoach stop between Mariposa and Clark's Station. Those coaches carried travelers toward the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley.
In 1949, residents started the Bootjack Stompers Square Dance Club. Its weekly dances at a hall near the Bootjack Store became a center of town life. The club reached its 75th anniversary in 2024. That made it one of the oldest active square dance groups in California.
