About Boulevard Park, Washington

Boulevard Park is a community of 4,094 people in King County, with Seattle on its north side, Tukwila on the east, Burien on the south and White Center on the west. It sits 8 miles south of downtown Seattle, and the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is 5 miles farther south. Its best-known story began in 1923, when Seattle's Jewish community built a golf club of its own on McKinley Hill.

  • The Glendale club, 1923In 1923, Seattle's Jewish community was kept out of the city's established golf clubs, so its members started their own, the Glendale Golf and Country Club. They bought 80 acres on McKinley Hill from the South Seattle Land Company, with options on more land, and laid out a course there. It opened on June 30, 1925, and was well received. The club later became Glen Acres Golf and Country Club.
  • More than a golf clubLeo S. Schwabacher ran the Schwabacher Hardware Company businesses in Seattle and was named president of the Glendale club. He wanted it to be a place for golf and also a center of social life for the local Jewish community.
  • Its own census place in 2010In the 2000 census, Boulevard Park was counted together with its neighbor as the Riverton-Boulevard Park census-designated place. The two were split for the 2010 census, and Boulevard Park has been counted on its own since then. Some of its children attend Highline School District schools, and others attend Seattle Public Schools.
